***

The first hour
she was too hot.
Winding the window down,
hair whipping about her face.
Eyes on the road,
she said.

The second hour
she fell asleep.
Head on my shoulder,
drool on my shirt.
Don't take it personally,
she said

The third hour
I missed the turning.
Unnoticed for half an hour,
we went the scenic route.
Idiot,
was all she said

The fourth hour
she got hungry.
Making me pull over.
for burgers and ice cream.
You're paying,
she said.

The fifth hour
we arrived.
Unlocked the gate,
drove up to the porch.
It's good to be home,
she said.
