5 months later
Scully was very pregnant, even though she
had about 4 months to go before delivery,
her stomach had gotten quite big. She
complained a lot and her moods would swing
to a point of no return. She quickly
apologized but Mulder understood. He knew
it was just unbalanced hormones and he
didn't hold anything against her. They
were planning William's birthday party,
he'd turn 9 this month and Scully was very
excited because she'd really get to mother
him to death. She did it last time when he
turned 8. He thought he was practically an
adult, which made both Mulder & Scully
laugh. Their baby was growing up while she
was literally growing a baby inside her.
She was still being closely monitored. It
was a high risk pregnancy due to
complications with her last one. Scully
seemed to be okay, she felt great.
Everyone was healthy and she had a
birthday to plan.
Mulder was still working and with that
assistant Scully didn't trust in the
least. Even though she never personally
met her, she could see it. Mulder's
assistant was a bit 'friendly' and was
very touchy and hands on. Scully didn't
like it one bit. His assistant did good
work but the way she was around him was
uncalled for. Did she not see his left
ring finger? Did she not notice the
pictures of his family on his desk?
Scully was putting the finishing touches
on William's birthday cake. She figured
she could surprise him with it this
weekend. It was Thursday and his birthday
fell on a Saturday this month. She
finished, covering the cake, placing it in
the refrigerator. William was at school so
she had ample time to hide it, along with
the few things they had bought him days
earlier. She was about to go into their
master bathroom for some ibuprofen since
her back was killing her. While she was
walking past the dresser, she noticed
Mulder's important patient file still
laying there. He told her about the nature
of the case the day before as she
patiently listened. He needed that file
that day but had unfortunately left it.
The ibuprofen was long forgotten. She was
soon holding the file, along with her car
keys, heading out the door. She still had
time. He didn't need the file until noon.
She had a doctor's appointment in a few
hours anyway.
**
Mulder looked high and low in his office
for that file. He had no clue where the
heck it could have gone. He didn't even
remember the last place he saw it. He had
a messy filing system. His assistant was
well 'looking' if you call wearing a very
mini skirt to work, bent over further than
necessary to look. Well there you go.
Mulder had to admit, she was throwing
herself at him. But she did work and no
one else he interviewed qualified. Just
yesterday she had her bra showing,
basically sticking her breasts in his face
as she leaned over him. Scully would have
freaked completely, she wouldn't have
accepted that. He had worked with her for
a while now but it was only last month
that she started showing any real interest
in him. Mulder was still a very hot catch
but his assistant didn't see that. Not the
way Scully did. Tammy, his assistant's
name, saw him as some sort of sex object.
But Scully, she loved him for just being
himself, all of him, his mind, his body
and his spirit. And he loved her for the
same reasons and more. She made him feel.
Something no other woman had been able to
do, let alone attempt to in the first
place. But this Tammy, she was bold. She
didn't even address him correctly, not
that he really minded. It was sort of
annoying actually since he hated his first
name. Mulder accidentally dropped his
pencil on the floor. He'd been tapping it
on the table since he came in, and lost
his grip, flinging it across the room. He
was about to get it but then Tammy just
had to step in. His assistant was pretty
hot.
"Don't worry. I'll get it." She said,
bending over in some stripper stance to
retrieve the fallen pencil, right in front
of him. Wow. She was bold. Mulder found
himself tempted to look. Just to check it
out, he wasn't going to act on it. It was
there, why not look right? Wrong, Scully
walked in a second later. She cleared her
throat, making his secretary jump while
Mulder was busted in the act of glancing.
Oh what, like women don't do it? She
quirked her brows at him, still able to
pull off that death eye stare while 20
weeks along. He immediately jumped from
his desk.
"Dana." He said.
"Fox." Scully said back. She knew he hated
his first name, which got her an eye roll
from him.
"Hi Miss.uhh. *snaps fingers* your name?"
Tammy the secretary said. She knew her
damn name; she knew he was married too.
Scully looked like she was about to blow
and not from her very visible preganacy.
"You know--" She started to say until
Mulder stopped her by talking over her.
"--the weather outside is nice. honey,
let's go check it out." He said with a
push out the door, closing it, leaving his
secretary alone in the room. While they
were outside, on the other side of the
door, she handed him the files.
"I've been looking all over for these.
where'd you find them?" He asked.
"They were on the dresser. But the
question is: what were you doing just
now?" She wanted to know, he made the 'I'm
about to lie' face, which Scully instantly
recognized and stopped him.
"No, what were you doing?" She asked him.
"Scully, do you trust me?" He posed a
question right back which she quickly
answered.
"What kind of question is that? Mulder, of
course I trust you." She simply said.
"Well then that should be enough." He told
her, she sighed after a moment, looking at
her watch. She'd be late if she didn't get
going. And freeway traffic was probably
horrible and backed up.
"Damn. I'm gonna be late." She announced.
"Late for what?"
"My uhh doctor's appointment." She said.
"Right, right." He had completely
forgotten about that. Not that he could
forget that she was pregnant. No one could
forget.
"I'll see you at home." She said, running
her hand down his arm. He gave her a half
smile as she turned toward the door,
leaving. He sighed.
**
Scully had made it to the doctor's office
safe and on time. She was going in for her
20 week check up to check her blood
pressure, blood sugar and various other
things to ensure a healthy pregnancy. She
waited in the waiting room until she was
called. The hospital room was cold and she
was a little nervous. In what seemed like
a flash, the examination was complete and
she was pulling her clothes back on. The
attending nurse informed her that the
doctor would be with her in a minute. She
slowly sat down, using the wall for
balance. A couple of minutes later and the
doctor returned with the news.
"Dana, your test results are back and I'm
happy to tell you that you're fine. Your
baby is fine." He informed her. She sighed
her relief. Every visit in that very room
was frightening.
"Oh thank god." She said, trying to slow
her breathing.
"However. I am concerned with your lack of
protein intake. You're eating for two. But
that's pretty much it." Doctor Rich
finished with. She was free to go.
"Thank you." She said, trying her damnest
to get up. She finally did. The doctor
wrote out a prescription for more prenatal
vitamins.
"Don't forget to stop at the front desk on
your way out to schedule a follow-up." He
said. She nodded. The doctor handed her
the prescription and she left.
She wanted to finish getting things
together for William's birthday party
before he got home from school. She got
her prescription filled and continued
running errands.
**
Mulder had this feeling that something was
going to happen, maybe not today, maybe
not tomorrow; but somewhere in the near
future. He brushed the feeling aside,
continuing with his work. He thought maybe
it was just stress. He had to work twice
as hard and accept twice has many patients
as before since Scully wasn't working.
It was stressful at times and he didn't
get to see his family as much as he wanted
to in the last few months. They were
trying to save money to send William off
to camp that summer. He was begging to go
and his parents didn't see anything wrong
with it. It was hard to save money for
that when his birthday was right around
when school ended.
Mulder's assistant was at a desk at the
entrance desk organizing and filing papers
into folders, dividing them into sacks. It
was late afternoon closely peeking night.
Mulder had explained to his assistant
about being careful when dealing with his
patients. He needed to avoid the problems
that arose the last time, leaving him with
two marks to prove this.
His assistant, Tammy, had been quite
content after his wife left. He assumed
she was plotting but didn't really care;
at least she was working, and quietly at
that. Mulder was ready to go home to his
life. He finished with his patient reports
and placed the papers neatly back into
their separate folders. He stood up from
his desk, taking his files to the filing
cabinet. They were alphabetized by last
name. He put his coat on while walking out
of his office. He told his assistant she
was free to go. She did. He locked the
entire office, darkening the building.
**
Mulder arrived home to a brightly lit
house. You'd think by the look of it,
there was a person in each room. But it
was just Scully in the house, alone. She
was sitting at the dinner table carefully
wrapping the gifts in patterned paper. She
didn't hear him come in until she heard a
set of keys hitting glass. He walked into
the dining area where she was, looking at
her with such beauty and awe. She looked
up from her task to acknowledge him.
"Hey, it's a little early for you isn't
it?" She said first, with a smirk,
continuing her work.
"I wanted to see you." He emphasized
closing in on her.
"That's a first."
"Where's William?" He asked.
"At my mothers. I didn't finish the
wrapping in time and I asked her to pick
him up from school--oh." She finished,
making a funny face, then a joyful
expression. She placed a hand over her
stomach, the baby was kicking. It caught
her off guard. He didn't quite catch on as
to why she had made the first face until
her expression changed. He walked closer
to where she was and kneeled down beside
her. She took his hand and placed it on
her swollen belly so he could feel the
baby's movements. He smiled, looking into
her eyes, she smiled back. He laid his
head against her stomach to hear, wrapping
his arms around her waist. She ran her
fingers through his hair, smiling warmly
at him. After a moment, she spoke.
"What's wrong?" She softly asked him,
still running her fingers through his
hair.
"Nothing. I just really missed you. How
was your doctor's appointment?" He
queried, pulling away to look her directly
in the eye.
"It was fine. They gave me some prenatal
vitamins. He was concerned about my
protein intake though. But my tests came
back normal as far as I'm concerned."
"That's great. Have you eaten yet?" He
inquired a great deal more.
"No. I didn't feel like cooking so I
ordered in. It should be here in a
minute." She answered. She shook her head,
taking noticing that he was asking her a
load of questions.
"Are you interrogating me? Did something
happen at work?"
"No, no. I'm sorry, I'm just concerned."
He simply said. He realized he was really
worried. He didn't really get much work
done after she left the office earlier
that day.
"I'm fine Mulder, the baby is fine. We're
okay." She assured him. He looked away for
a moment until the doorbell rang. She
sighed about to get up, but he gently
pulled her back down.
"What?" She asked.
"I'll get it." He told her, rising, going
towards the door.
"I'm 5 months pregnant, Mulder. Not
handicapped." She shouted across the room.
He smiled at that comment, reaching the
door. It was the take out. The delivery
guy told him the price. Mulder started to
dig in his pocket for his wallet, paying
the man. It was three bags of goodies. It
was enough to feed an army or two
basketball teams including the alternate
players.
**
Scully was in her nighty reading in bed,
under the lamplight. She was still a
little hungry from dinner and decided to
bring some egg rolls to bed. Mulder didn't
mind. She started to get weird cravings as
time went on. He was half asleep beside
her. She put the book down on top of her
stomach. She wanted to sleep but couldn't
because her mind was racing. She couldn't
stop thinking about William's birthday.
She wanted it to be special since it would
be the last time she'd spend with her son
before camp. They finished wrapping his
gifts together.
"Mulder?" She whispered as though not to
disturb him. After a moment, he answered
back.
"Yeah?" He said eyes still closed.
"I'm sorry I woke you."
"Well I wasn't really asleep." He replied,
sitting up. She sighed.
"Did you get the invitations for William's
birthday party?"
"Yeah I did. There at the office." He
replied, rubbing his tired eyes. He laid
his back against the wall, resting it
there as though he were about to sleep in
that position. He was sleepy as well. Only
his mind wouldn't allow him to rest.
"We probably should put the breakables
away before the weekend. I don't wanna
have to go glass shopping again."
"Glass shopping? Gee Scully; twelve years
ago, glass shopping would have been the
last thing on your mind."
"Leaving the bureau wasn't exactly on the
list of things to do either." She answered
his declarative statement.
"Are you saying you regret leaving?"
"No, I don't regret it at all. But I do
miss the energy of it all, being out there
in the field, the danger. Feeling needed."
"What do you mean?"
"I--I don't know, maybe its pregnancy
hormones. I feel-god, like a lot of things
and they aren't nice images." She
retorted, taking a bit out of the egg
roll. She couldn't get her grumbling belly
to subside.
"Maybe we should go somewhere. out. You
haven't exactly been anywhere since---"
"I guess." She said, yawning. Mulder
reached over, taking the book from her
belly to see what it was.
"The ultimate guide on how to be a good
parent? You've got to be kidding me." A
look of shocked played upon his face, she
simply shrugged.
"Well. I assume there's a few things I
don't know that I probably should right?"
She said.
"Like what? You're a wonderful mother. No
book's gonna tell you that." He told her,
placing the book on his side of the bed.
That comment made the corners of her mouth
turn up. He looked at her and noticed she
was smiling.
"Don't give me that look... you know it's
true." He said, chuckling. She was still
smiling brightly at him, looking away for
a moment.
"Com'ere." She said, drawing him closer to
her, to sleep. He reached over her,
turning the nightstand light out. He
kissed her temple as they lay together;
breathing in each others air before
sleeping.
The End
